Ok, so this week has been nothing like the normal workout routines I usually do at home. Because here I am in Utah doing some heavy duty high altitude hiking!
I didn't have as many problems as I thought I would given the hole in my heart thing, but I must say, I'm really glad that I had already started walking at home before I made it out here.
Dana has been a great influence on my thoughts about nutrition this week. So I'm going to take a lot of great information home with me.
I just have to share something that happened to me last week. There was a lady in our office from one of our other facilities. We were talking about food and the like, because we both really like food. But after she heard some of the foods I refuse to eat (tomatoes, broccoli, etc) she told me that I ate like a child. It hit me like a ton of bricks... I eat like a college kid even though I'm a grown woman! I need help! I am never afraid to try any food that you put in front of me (ok, I might draw the line at monkey brains or something...) and I've tried to make myself like tomatoes and broccoli, but I just can't stomach the texture.
Give me some tips guys... I can exercise all day long, but if I don't change the way I eat, it's not going to do any good.

yay trisha's here! welcome!! hmm, tips on food...well, how do you eat your tomatoes and broccoli? for example, i loooooove broccoli, but only if you cook it a certain way; sauteed crisp/tender, not mushy. my sister loooooves broccoli too, but she steams hers until there's no crispiness left, it's all mush. so if you steam yours mushy, maybe that's the texture you don't like, and you should try sauteeing it, or just eating it raw, or vice versa. i don't like it raw, but i know some people do or else it wouldn't be in salads that way. does that make sense? and tomatoes, well, i eat mine raw. i acutally adore tomatoes, and will eat them any way, any where. however, since my last baby, i can't stand tomatoe skins when their cooked, so i take those off. hope this helps!
oh, and if you wanna change the way you eat completely, just let me know. you're talking to a former anorexic, and i have about a million tricks up my sleeve.
I only like frozen broccoli because the freezing process seems to take away all the broccoli texture that I hate.
I use frozen broccoli to make an asian dish called "beef & broccoli" that I make using a seasoning packet I get at the grocery store. I just follow the directions on the packet, so it's a no brainer healthy dinner
Umm, or just replace it with a another leafy green vegetable. Throw raw Spinach leaves in a leafy green salad and you get about the same benefit as broccoli. Asparagus is another leafy green that I love. I prefer it really crisp, though, sauteed in olive oil and lightly salted.
You don't have to just eat tomatoes either, you could eat them in Spaghetti sauce, salsa, or V8 Juice. I take 2/3 a glass of V8 juice and 1/3 glass code red mountain dew, and WALA! One serving of vegetables right there. I used to drink V8 juice with calcium quite a bit when I was nursing because I can't drink milk since my kids are allergic.
I can tear up some spinach and asparagus, but I can't figure out what it is about the broccoli.
V8 and Code Red Mountain Dew? Yikes! I wouldn't be able to drink that anyway because I'm highly allergic to the red dye in the the code red, but that's something I've never heard of before!
do you know, i like virgin bloody marys rather than v8. it just tastes less....gross.
Wow! So there's a lot of people mixing Code Red w/ V8? That's new one for me.
Trisha, another good way to get tomatoes is to use tomato sauce or juice in your cooking. For example, if you're making Spanish rice, just add tomato sauce or the juice out of a can of tomatoes. You're still getting those very good for you tomatoes, without the texture problems. Another thing I like is my mom's Swiss steak! I'll have to get the recipe from her, since I've never made it, but it's steak cooked forever in a tomato juice/sauce and then served over mashed potatoes. Mmmmmm...it's way better tasting than sounding! ;)
do you know trisha, after having slept on this, i don't think your friend at work was right. there's refusing to try anything (childish), and trying it but not liking it. there are tons of things i don't like. cooked carrots, onions (which don't like me back), milk...i think for you, instead of trying to force your palate to except something it doesn't like, maybe you could find out what it is you don't like (broccoli, tomatoes) is good for, and then find other things that have those good things in them to substitute. make sense? everybody's different after all. just because you don't like something doesn't make you childish, as long as you've tried it with an open mind. i think anyway, and since i AM perfect...
Thanks Liz, I guess as long as I'm getting all the nutrients I need, it shouldn't matter all that much. And since you are perfect, I think you're right!
Mary, do you think your mom would share the receipe? That sounds like something I might be able to try.
